Africa Day

Africa Day is celebrated worldwide every May 25, a date that remembers the 1963 meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where 32 leaders of the continent's States formed the Organization of African Unity (OAU), currently the African Union (AU).

Since then, the celebrations in Cuba are special and, in addition to strengthening political and government ties, they promote cultural ties and different opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.

On this new celebration of Africa Day we renew our friendship and fraternity with the sister continent

  • Message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of Africa Day

This year we commemorate Africa Day in Cuba under exceptional conditions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This, however, will not prevent that such a relevant event as the foundation on May 25, 1963 of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), renamed African Union (AU) in 2002 be celebrated as we Cuban always do.

Message by the President of the People's Power National Assembly of the Republic of Cuba, Esteban Lazo Hernandez, on the occasion of Africa Day.

It is a great pleasure for me, on behalf of the Cuban Parliamentarians, to convey to the peoples of Africa our most sincere congratulations on the occasion of such a special celebration. Africa Day is as significant date for that continent as it is for Cuba, because of the deep ties that unite us.
