11th ALBA-TCP Summit ends with a demand for respect for Venezuela's sovereignty

During the XI Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), held on Monday, the heads of state and government of the member countries demanded respect for Venezuela's sovereignty and self-determination.

Likewise, the ten member nations reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of solidarity, social justice and cooperation, fundamental pillars of this regional organization.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that absolute respect for the sovereignty of nations and their self-determination are principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and International Law.

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, denounced the execution of a cybernetic and fascist coup d'état in Venezuela, during the last elections, confronted by the country's “civil-military and police union” in the first 48 hours.

At the end of the event, through a joint statement dated today in Caracas, ALBA-TCP leaders backed Maduro against the “ferocious onslaught of transnational powers” that imposed more than 930 unilateral coercive measures against the South American nation.

These sanctions, according to the declaration, have had a severe impact on the Venezuelan economy and society, in a global context marked by political and economic challenges.

The ALBA-TCP declaration strongly condemned any attempted coup d'état, noting that these actions represent a threat to democracy, peace and stability in the region.

In addition, the member countries repudiated what they described as a “communicational war” aimed at the younger generations in Venezuela, with the objective of fomenting violence and division in society.

Acts of violence and vandalism against people, public infrastructure and patriotic symbols in Venezuela were also rejected by ALBA-TCP.

According to the statement, these events sought to create a perception of chaos in a country that held elections in an atmosphere of peace and democracy. It also denounced the disregard of the electoral results by a sector of the Venezuelan opposition, which has requested foreign intervention and additional sanctions against the country.

On August 16, 22 countries, together with the European Union (EU), issued a joint communiqué to demand the “immediate publication of all original records” of the July 28 elections in Venezuela, as well as “impartial and independent” verification.

Consequently, the ALBA-TCP leaders today urged the international community to respect the sovereignty and democratic will of the Venezuelan people, while regretting that some governments have questioned the electoral results and promoted resolutions which, according to them, do not reflect the reality of the country.

In this regard, they reiterated the importance of not intervening in the internal affairs of other states and advocated dialogue and cooperation as means to resolve differences.

The declaration also recognized the decision of the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela to resolve the electoral dispute, which was considered an example of “sovereign exercise”.

ALBA-TCP reaffirmed its support for the constitutional and democratic government of Venezuela, congratulating President Nicolás Maduro and his people for their “resilience and commitment to justice.”

The Alliance reiterated that Latin America and the Caribbean is a zone of peace, underlining the obligation not to intervene in the internal affairs of other States.

The meeting concluded with a call for the defense of the legitimate rights and resources of the peoples of the region, and with a condemnation of the imperialist and coup attempts which, according to the Alliance, have harmed the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.

ALBA-TCP leaders pledged to continue working together to guarantee peace, stability and cooperation in the region, in an effort to preserve the integrity and sovereignty of its member countries.

ALBA-TCP is comprised of Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Kitts and Nevis.
