THE 140th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROTEST OF BARAGUÁ, IS CONMEMORATED IN SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES

The Embassy of Cuba in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was the site of the political-cultural event for the 140th anniversary of the Baraguá Protest, in which a tribute of remembrance was also paid to the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and the National Hero José Martí.

The President of the Vincentian Parliament, Jomo Sanga Thomas, the President of the East Caribbean Parliamentary Assembly, Rene Baptiste, the Senator and Parliamentary Secretary of Education, Ecclesiastical Affairs and National Reconciliation, Deborah Charles, as well as Mr. Maxwell Charles, Director of Regional Integration of the Office of the Prime Minister, gathered together at the event, along with other Vincentian personalities, members of the accredited diplomatic corps, Cuban collaborators and citizens of the largest of the Antilles, residents of SVG.

When addressing the audience, the Cuban Ambassador, Vilma Reyes Valdespino, explained the historical context in which the Baraguá Protest took place, and the special significance that Maceo's firm attitude acquires in the current circumstances, when the US and the regional right wing attacks the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, trying to break their unity, intimidate and make them give up their dreams of independence and freedom.

Dr. Yumiris Lugo Ferrán, on behalf of the Cuban collaborators in SVG, read a Declaration condemning the U.S economic, financial and commercial blockade, which has been in place for more than half a century, has tried to suffocate the Cuban people, depriving them of the necessary resources to enhance the standards of life and the development of the nation.

The activity closed with a cultural gala, led by the Cuban boy Michel Enrique Israel, and the Vincentian artists Hayden Billingy  and Andres Bascombe.
