Conmemoran en Londres el 60 Aniversario de la Campaña de Alfabetización.

London, 3 November 2021- The 60th Anniversary of the Cuba’s Literacy Campaign and the creation of the National Union of Education, Science and Sports Workers (SNTECD) was commemorated in an online meeting, organized by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) and the UK's National Education Union (NEU), under the slogan “Viva Education! Viva Solidarity!”. The meeting featured Niurka González Oberá, General Secretary of SNTECD; Daniel Kebede, President of NEU, and Bernard Regan, CSC National Secretary.

During their presentations, the speakers recalled the importance of the Literacy Campaign that established the basis of the Cuban education system, and that in just one year eradicated illiteracy in the country. They also referred to the fact that, despite the special conditions imposed by the pandemic, teaching programs were able to continue at all educational levels.

For her part, Niurka González thanked the CSC and UNE for their solidarity with Cuba and denouncing the unjust blockade of the United States, which also impacts the education sector.

Kebede and Regan, from NEU and CSC, respectively, ratified their solidarity with Cuba and their commitment to continue the fight against the United States blockade.

The event also featured the intervention of Alpha Kane, a British Literacy Campaign specialist who made a historical account of it, as well as several brigade members who shared memories and experiences of their participation.

On the Cuban side, the event was attended by First Secretary, Michel Rodríguez,  and Second Secretary, Aymée Díaz Negrín.
