Pretoria, 25 May 2026. — The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in South Africa commemorates the 62nd Africa Day, celebrated across the continent on 25 May, the date marking the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, now the African Union.
Cuba has maintained a special relationship with Africa since the 1960s, when it began to lend support to the continent’s national liberation movements. The Cuban Embassy in South Africa will continue to work towards internationalist solidarity and support for the African Union’s efforts to build a future of dignity, sovereignty and prosperity for all African peoples.
Today, on Africa Day, we quote the words of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro: “Africa is our continent. Its pain is our pain. Its victory is our victory”. Cuba-Africa solidarity is not history; it is the present and the future.
