Nicosia, November 22, 2022 - On November 22, 1960, the governments of the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Cuba announced the establishment of diplomatic relations. Thus, the largest island of the Greater Antilles became one of the first countries to recognize the Cypriot Republic, after achieving its independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
62 years have passed since that memorable event, marked by the continuity of the ideas and principles of the then presidents of Cuba, Fidel Castro, and of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, main promoters of the strengthening of ties between the two islands, based on the principle of the just claim in defense of the independence and sovereignty of the peoples.
The support between Cyprus and Cuba in international forums has had a permanent character, where respect for multilateralism and just causes has prevailed. Both islands were pioneers of the Non-Aligned Movement, where they defended the just causes of the peoples and the right to development without external interference. During these years, visits have been made and various bilateral contacts have been maintained at all possible levels.
Different cooperation agreements signed between the two countries in the fields of culture, science, education, sports, agriculture, telecommunications, among others, are still in force. There have also been several cultural exchanges and increased trade relations.
We would like to thank and pay a simple tribute to all those who have made possible during these years the maintenance and strengthening of relations between Cyprus and Cuba (Embacuba Cyprus).
