The Abdala vaccine – developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) – is safe, well tolerated and highly effective, confirmed the titular institution, through a Twitter account, when making public the results of the phase III clinical trial, to the evaluation in adults of the efficacy and safety of the immunogen against SARS-CoV-2.
The entity recalled that the efficacy of Abdala against symptomatic COVID-19 was 92.28%, after the phase III clinical trial was carried out in 2021, with more than 40,000 volunteers from the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.
The CIGB also highlighted that Abdala induces high titers of antibodies similar to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, evaluated with the same Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Plus test, according to a publication in the prestigious Journal of Biotechnology and Biomedicine.
On July 9, 2021, Abdala became the first anti-COVID-19 vaccine in Latin America, once the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices approved the authorization for emergency use, based on the results of efficacy demonstrated in the clinical trial.
Subsequently, it was authorized and administered in pediatric ages between two and 18 years, showing in the results of the clinical study an increase of 99.15% of antibodies in volunteers from three to 11 years, and 98.28% in those of 12 to 18.
It is also used as an anti-COVID-19 booster dose in the population with a previous scheme, and has been marketed in countries such as Venezuela, Vietnam, Mexico and Nicaragua.
