Nicosia, September 30, 2026. The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Cyprus, Mr. Rubén Pino Martínez, had a cordial and friendly exchange this Thursday with the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) deputy, Ms. Marina Nicolaou, in her office at the Cypriot Parliament.
The meeting took place in a fraternal atmosphere, full of camaraderie and friendship, during which Pino Martínez thanked her for the warm reception amid her busy parliamentary schedule and updated her on the difficult situation Cuba is going through due to the energy blockade and the intensification of the hostile U.S. embargo that has been in place for nearly seven decades. On this occasion, he gave her a copy of the report that Cuba will present to the United Nations General Assembly next October. The document concisely outlines the impact of the blockade on all sectors of Cuban people's lives between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026.
Both discussed the recent and positive meeting of the Cuban diplomat with Mr. Karoullas, President of the Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives, where initiatives and areas of common interest were identified to strengthen interparliamentary relations between the two countries.
For her part, Marina Nicolaou reiterated her great joy at being able to receive him on the premises of the Cypriot parliament and condemned the unjust energy blockade policy and the ongoing threats from the U.S. against the Caribbean island, while reaffirming her willingness to keep alive the bonds of friendship and that enduring solidarity with the Cuban people who, with honor and courage, have been resisting this unjust blockade from the northern power for over 65 years. She added that Cyprus is also next to the neighboring people of Palestine, who are suffering a genocide at the hands of Israel, and will continue supporting Cuba in its rightful demand against the criminal blockade.
The host deputy mentioned that she follows up and coordinates various permanent committees of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, from whose representations she will always support both friendly countries and promote possible initiatives that encourage bilateral parliamentary exchange and even strengthen it.
