The Cuban Ambassador in Ireland Hugo Rene Ramos Milanes held a meeting with Prof. Patrick G. O'Shea, President of the University College of Cork, as well as with other professors and executives in charge of the University's external cooperation.
In this meeting, the academic links of this house of high studies with Latin American Universities, including Cubans, in various areas such as language teaching, postgraduate specialization and obtaining scientific degrees in exact, technical and social sciences were highlighted.
Professor O'Shea highlighted the importance for his University of the studies related to sustainable food production, healthy nutrition and assistance for the eradication of malnutrition and hunger. In this area, opportunities of joint work that could be developed with the agrarian Universities and Cuban research centers linked to this sphere, which constitutes a strategic priority in Cuba, were outlined.
The next execution of a project for the development of renewable energies was also addressed.
Two Cuban specialists currently participate in academic activities at the University of Cork.
The meeting at the University of Cork took place as part of a joint visit to that city by a representation of the Ambassadors of GRULAC residing in Ireland and composed of the Heads of Mission of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba and Mexico, in the occasion of the National Commemoration of the Famine, which was hosted by the University and was chaired by Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland and Simon Coveney, Tánaiste and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
