Pretoria, 27 April 2020.- The ANC Youth League in the Western Cape welcomes the arrival of more than 200 Cuban doctors into our country to join us in another heroic and selfless struggle: helping to curb the spread of Covid-19.
We believe it is an important symbol that Cuba, who sent combatants to Angola to help defeat the South African Defense Force and thereby open the final stretch of the road to liberation, should have touched down in South Africa on Freedom Day.
When some countries stood back and did not lift a finger to help us in our liberation war, Cuba, under Fidel Castro, as true socialist revolutionaries sent troops into Angola. They made our struggle, their struggle. We will forever be grateful to Cuba.
Knowing and admiring their medical skills, we believe that the Cuban medical specialists will help us to another historic win. This time it will be a victory over a deadly virus. Welcome to the fight Comrades we appreciate you answering our call.
Now that they are here, we call on the Western Cape Provincial Government to deploy these highly skilled medical professionals to areas where they can use their expertise optimally and provide them with the necessary support as we have become the epicenter of the virus in South Africa.
We are confident that just like in Angola; these Cubans will walk side-by-side with us and will also celebrate victory with us just as they did in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
