Following the recent demonstrations by Cubans in Santiago de Cuba and Granma, where a group of compatriots have peacefully expressed their discontent with the current economic situation in the country.
The economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the US government is the main cause of the current economic situation in the country. Added to this are the 243 additional measures imposed by the government of former US President Donald Trump, which the government of current President Joe Biden has maintained as a mechanism of political pressure to create discontent among the Cuban population.
In recent years, the Cuban government has begun to update the economic model in order to continue developing the country, but financial persecution and fines imposed on large banks, such as the recent $3.7 million fine imposed on the Swiss private banking group EFG International AG, have prevented further progress.
The Cuban government recognises the difficulties faced by its citizens and is on the streets working day in and day out. The local authorities of these provinces have shown up at the sites of the rallies and have clearly explained the situation and the actions that are being taken, but the armchair generals insist and call on the Cubans to remain in the streets, but not to eliminate the genocidal and inhuman blockade that deprives an entire people.
From the Association of Cuban Residents in Cyprus we support all our compatriots and the Revolutionary government, and we reaffirm our solidarity with the Cuban Revolution in the defence of its sovereignty. Cuba deserves to live better without a blockade, Cuba deserves to live in peace.
