British government reiterates its opposition to the US blockade on Cuba

The British Conservative government reiterated its opposition to the unilateral US blockade against Cuba and assured that its US counterpart is aware of the UK position on the issue, we knew today.

According to information disclosed on Tuesday by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, a British Foreign Office official assured the House of Commons that the Executive authority headed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not support this measure against the Caribbean island.

We consider the territorial impacts of the embargo (blockade), including those on UK companies, to be contrary to international law, and we are not persuaded that these sanctions encourage potential reforms and economic progress, said Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for European Neighborhood and the Americas, Wendy Morton.

The representative of the British Foreign Office went to Westminster Palace the day before to respond to an interpellation presented by the President of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cuba, Grahame Morris.

The Labour parliamentarian's question had been addressed to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and concerned the willingness of the Foreign Office to make representations with Washington for the lifting of the blockade on the Caribbean island, and for the end of the restrictions that prevent it from receiving medical resources and humanitarian aid to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, Morton said that U.S. authorities have been informed, both privately and through public statements, of London's opposition to this anti-Cuban policy.

The United Kingdom unfailingly votes in favour of the annual United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial, and financial embargo, she said.

Morton also said her government is actively working with its Cuban counterpart and other organizations on ideas to reform the business environment, and provide direct support to UK companies wishing to do business with the Caribbean country.
