Cyprus, January 16, 2019. - Organized by the Friendship Association of Cyprus with Cuba and the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL, according to its acronym in Greek), an emotional ceremony was held in Nicosia in honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
The inaugural words were given by the General Secretary of AKEL, Andros Kyprianou and the Ambassador of Cuba in Cyprus, Omar Leyva, who referred to the different stages of the revolution and the role played by its main leaders, in particular, the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. In his speech, Kyprianou was emphatic in demanding the end of the US blockade against Cuba, the definitive closure of the Guantanamo Naval Base and the return of that territory to Cuba, while calling for the strengthening of the solidarity actions in favor of the Caribbean island.
The activity was attended by members of the Political Bureau and AKEL parliamentarians, leaders of their women's associations, POGO, and youth associations, EDON, the President of the World Federation of Democratic Youths, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and directors and members of the associations of Friendship and Cuban Residents in Cyprus, among other friends of Cuba.
This activity marks the beginning of a series of commemorative actions that will be taking place throughout the national territory throughout 2019, in order to honor the transcendent work of the Cuban Revolution on its 60th Anniversary.
