Dublin, Sunday, May 12, 2024. Chaired by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Ireland, James Corcoran and with the presence as a guest of the Cuban ambassador, Bernardo Guanche Hernández, today a new anniversary of the assassination of James Connolly, a prominent figure of Irish national history, was commemorated.
The attendees, the communist leader and the Cuban ambassador, paid tribute to the heroic 16 participants in the uprising carried out in the Irish capital, from April 24 to 29, 1916. Known as the “Easter Rising”, 14 of them were massacred, among them, James Connolly, who was executed, precisely, on May 12 of that year.
The Cuban Ambassador recalled the role played by Connolly in the creation of the first Irish republican and socialist party, his leadership and his opposition to the participation of the Irish in the First World War. He also highlighted his revolutionary legacy to Ireland and the world.
The diplomat took advantage of the occasion to denounce the blockade and the unjust inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. He also appreciated the solidarity of the Irish with the Cuban people, in particular, that developed by the Communist Party of Ireland.
The event took place at the “Arbor Hill” Memorial in the Irish capital, where the 14 leaders of the “Easter Rising” executed in 1916 were finally buried.
