Nicosia, Cyprus, June 17, 2026. — With a message from the Communist Party of Cuba, reiterating “the condemnation and warning about the danger posed to the Latin American and Caribbean region, and particularly to the island, by the aggressive policy of Yankee imperialism, as well as its growing and open threat of a direct military aggression against the island", the call and renewed condemnation of millions of Cubans were heard in Nicosia today, addressing the world.
As part of the working sessions of the 3rd International Conference “Peace and Social Justice in a Time of Multiple Crises” by the Alexis Tsipras Institute (INAT), in collaboration with the Promitheas Research Institute (INEP), the voice of Cuba was heard this morning in the Cypriot capital through a message delivered by Emilio Lozada García, head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
Presented by Vera Policarpou, head of International Relations and European Policy of the Central Committee of the AKEL Party, during the segment “Evolution of the Situation Worldwide,” Lozada García’s message delved into the precise and direct condemnation of the economic, commercial, financial, and energy blockade imposed by the United States government; the same government “that in an arbitrary and politically manipulated way, has defined our country as an unusual and extraordinary threat to its national security,' with the threat of a direct military aggression, 'which would constitute a violation of the United Nations Charter, International Law, and the principles that proclaim Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.'
In his message, Lozada García denounced the two executive orders by the U.S. government from January 29 and May 1, which “have taken economic suffocation against our country to unprecedented levels, imposing an energy siege equivalent to a naval blockade and the declaration of the so-called secondary sanctions with a clearly extraterritorial nature, which have affected the presence of foreign companies in sectors essential for the country's development such as tourism, mining, and banking-finance.”
He also condemned the “false, politically motivated accusation against Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, by a court in Florida, which tries to damage the symbolism his figure represents for the Revolution and the anti-imperialist struggle.”
He added how “for more than six decades the U.S. government has created pretexts to try to justify its criminal behaviour and the collective punishment of the Cuban people. But we are a country of peace that does not pose any threat to that nuclear superpower.” And he specified: “If they dared to attack us, we would defend our homeland to the last consequences.”
In the message from the head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, it was also clarified how “we remain willing to dialogue, without interference in our internal affairs or conditions on our system".
He thanked the invitation and the opportunity to represent the Communist Party of Cuba at this important 3rd International Conference “Peace and Social Justice in a Period of Multiple Crises", which he assured “will be successful".
A message that preceded the discussion of the second panel coordinated by Vera Policarpou invited reflection on a world that “has become increasingly uncertain, with conflicts that erupt and multiply, fuelled by powers seeking to take control of resources and transport routes, while trying to safeguard their hegemony and domination across the planet.”
“We have witnessed,” Policarpou noted, “how all of this unfolds by any means, not only through the threat of using force but through its actual use, in total violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. International institutions, diplomacy, negotiations, and the rules established after World War II are being marginalised and defunded, and it is the people who pay the consequences.”
Throughout the day, the event's discussions focused on the dynamics and development of conflicts in the Middle East, the Cyprus issue, human rights in times of war, the protection of religious minorities, and the need to formulate a strong progressive response to the rise of the far right and authoritarianism.
The conference brought together international political leaders, academics, and voices from civil society to address global crises, regional conflicts, human rights, and progressive responses across multiple interconnected areas.
It will conclude with the main speeches of the AKEL Party Secretary General, Stefanos Stefanou, and the former Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras.
