Congratulations to South Africa on the 32nd anniversary of the end of apartheid.

Pretoria, 27 April 2026. — The Government of the Republic of Cuba extends its most sincere congratulations to the people and government of South Africa on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of Freedom Day, a date that commemorates the historic end of the apartheid system in that African nation.

Letters from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla recalled the historic ties that unite both nations, forged through decades of struggle and the enduring friendship between Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela. Cuba reaffirms its commitment to continuing to strengthen relations of friendship and brotherhood.

On 27 April 1994, South Africa held its first free elections, an event that marked the official end of apartheid and consolidated democracy in the country. Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president, going down in history as a universal symbol of social justice.
