Washington, May 25, 2026 — The Congressional Black Caucus has raised its voice against the oil blockade imposed on Cuba and called on the U.S. administration to lift economic sanctions that, according to the organization, have worsened the humanitarian crisis on the island.
In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the legislative group described the policy of economic pressure as “barbaric” and held the current coercive measures responsible for the deterioration of living conditions for the Cuban people.
The statement was backed by the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Yvette D. Clarke, who said the organization would not remain silent in the face of the impact of the sanctions.
“Enough is enough! The Congressional Black Caucus will not stand by and allow this administration to continue this barbaric policy that is causing unimaginable human suffering in Cuba,” the statement read.
The organization alleged that the oil blockade and tightened sanctions have led to increased infant mortality, risk of famine, and a general decline in living standards in the Caribbean nation.
“Under the oil blockade and the tightened sanctions imposed by this administration, Cubans are dying,” the text emphasized.
In a press release on its official website, the Congressional Black Caucus reiterated its historic commitment to policies oriented toward peace, justice, and international cooperation, while rejecting what it described as “draconian” measures applied against Cuba.
“We demand an end to the oil blockade, the lifting of sanctions against Cuba, and that the Cuban people be allowed access to the basic resources they need to survive on the island,” the organization stated.
The statement adds to growing voices within the United States questioning the humanitarian impact of economic sanctions and calling for a review of U.S. policy toward Cuba.
