Pretoria, 15 October 2026. — During the 15th Congress of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the Deputy General Secretary of this historic and popular organisation, Gerald Twala, strongly condemned the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
Twala also praised Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz as a leading figure in the struggle for the liberation of the peoples of Southern Africa and as a symbol of solidarity, dignity and commitment to just causes.
The statement reaffirms the historic ties of friendship and solidarity between COSATU, the South African trade union movement and the Cuban Revolution, as well as the support of progressive organisations in South Africa for the demand for an immediate and unconditional end to the blockade.
The Cuban Embassy in South Africa welcomes COSATU’s firm stance and reiterates its call to strengthen international solidarity with the island.
