The Council of the District of Columbia passed a resolution in which it acknowledges and honors the Festival Artes de Cuba, launched on May 8 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a prestigious institution based in the U.S. capital city.
The resolution was presented to the Ambassador of Cuba to the United States, José Ramón Cabañas, by representatives of the City Council in an event held at the Embassy of Cuba in Washington D.C. to honor the Festival Artes de Cuba, the largest of its kind to be held in the United States.
The document refers to the Festival Artes de Cuba as an unprecedented event that displays the breadth and vitality of the Cuban culture and features in more than 50 events, hundreds of Cuban artists who reside on the Island and abroad.
It also highlights Cuba’s profound artistic and cultural influence and provides an opportunity to continue increasing the cultural exchanges and ties between the artists and peoples of Cuba and the United States.
The resolution highlights that the holding of the Festival coincides with the 40th anniversary of the historic first tour by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in the United States, a Cuban prestigious ballet company with functions at the John F. Kennedy Center scheduled from the forthcoming May 29 to June 3 this year.
