Havana, September 23rd.- The Business Group of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba completed the production of all the doses of vaccines necessary to immunize the Cuban population.
"The challenge was great, but we did it", published on Twitter by the President of BioCubaFarma, Eduardo Martínez Díaz, sharing the news.
He also congratulated those who made "this feat" possible, mainly the workers of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), the Aica Laboratories, the Finlay Vaccine Institute, the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) and the National Center for Biopreparations.
The Cuban strategy worked, based on our capabilities, we were able to develop more than one vaccine and we manufacture the doses we need in record time and difficult conditions, added Martínez Díaz.
The data provided by the Ministry of Public Health show the effectiveness of the vaccination process and reduce the risk of getting sick with COVID-19, reaching seriousness or dying, he said.
BioCubaFarma put in charge of producing Cuban vaccines against COVID-19 - Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus - several production lines in different companies of its conglomerate.
In the production plant of the AICA base business unit (UEB), belonging to the AICA Laboratories Company of BioCubaFarma, the production output of Abdala, an immunogen developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), takes place.
For its part, the Soberana 02 production system is the result of an alliance between the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), the Molecular Immunology Center (CIM) and the National Center for Biopreparations (BioCen).
In recent days, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized Cuba's leadership in the production of vaccines against the disease in our region, which is stated in the report «COVID-19 and vaccination in Latin America and the Caribbean: challenges, needs and opportunities ”.
Cuba is one of the top 20 vaccine manufacturing countries in the world, UNESCO recognizes.
