Cuba and Botswana sign agreement in health

Cuba and Botswana signed this Friday, May 8th, a new agreement that gives continuity and strengthen the historical ties of medical cooperation of the Caribbean island with the African nation.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba and the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Botswana was concluded by HE the Ambassador Patricia Pego Guerra and the Hon. Minister Dr. Lemogang Kwape, in a ceremony held at the Ministry, in Gaborone.

On the Cuban part, also attended Dr. Liam Kadel Dunan Cruz, National Coordinator of the Cuban Medical Team. Botswana was represented by the Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr. Moses Keetile, and other officers.

The Hon. Minister expressed gratitude to the Cuban Government in assisting the Government of Botswana’s efforts towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) mainly sustainable goal no. 3 – good health and wellbeing.

For her comment, Her Excellency Patricia Pego Guerra also thanked the Republic of Botswana for continuity of the long standing relationship in the medical cooperation and affirmed support from the Cuban Government in the efforts of fighting COVID-19. The diplomat ensures that Cuban health professions will remain in Botswana as long as necessary.

Cooperation of Cuba to Botswana in health sector started 30 years ago. Since then more than a thousand Cuban health professionals has assisted Botswana people across the country. At present they are 82, deployed in nine cities, towns and villages, covering 27 specialities, besides Pharmacy, Electromedic and Physiotherapy.

Havana and Gaborone established diplomatic relations on December 9th 1977. Emotional and crowning moments to always remember from these years are the visits to Cuba of three Botswana presidents, Sir Ketumile Masire, Festus Mogae and Seretse Khama Ian Khama. Source: Cuban Embassy to Botswana
