London, 26 June 2025 - In a cordial and friendly atmosphere, a productive meeting was held between Canning House executives and Soima Méndez, First Secretary for Commercial Affairs at the Cuban Embassy in the United Kingdom.
The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen existing bilateral ties. Also, to explore concrete opportunities for collaboration, especially in the areas of foreign trade, health and biotechnology and academia. Juan Terán, Director of Corporate Affairs, and Susana Berruecos, Director of Policy and Political Affairs, participated on behalf of Canning House.
During the exchange, the parties agreed on the importance of strengthening international cooperation. Shared interests were identified in the promotion of joint academic programmes, exchanges of experts in various branches of science such as biotechnology. Likewise, they converged on the severe economic affectations faced by the Cuban nation as a result of the blockade imposed by the United States.
Canning House, founded in 1943, is the main British forum for the promotion of relations with Latin America, the Caribbean and the Iberian Peninsula. Throughout its history, it has established itself as a strategic bridge between the United Kingdom and the Latin American world. It promotes mutual understanding through political dialogue, economic analysis and inter-institutional meetings.
First Secretary Soima Méndez reiterated the Cuban government's willingness to maintain a respectful and constructive dialogue with British actors, linked to the sphere of trade, investment and international cooperation. For their part, the directors of Canning House stressed the importance of maintaining open spaces for joint reflection, and underlined Cuba's role as an active interlocutor in the Latin American region.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to follow up on the initiatives proposed. In addition, to continue promoting collaborative actions in the short and medium term.
