Tehran, September 10, 2020. The Ambassador of Cuba, Alexis Bandrich Vega was received at the headquarters of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences by its Rector, Dr. Alireza Zali and part of his team. Dr. Zali is currently serving as Head of the Coronavirus Fighting Headquarters in the capital province of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
During the fraternal meeting, both parties ratified their willingness to cooperate in the fight against the pandemic that is hitting the world and take advantage of the potential and experience achieved by both nations to eradicate the damage that it continues to cause.
Dr. Zali had words of praise for the Cuban health system and the development achieved by our pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and emphasized the undeniable social, human and internationalist value that Cuba gives to its advances in these fields. The Iranian side expressed its interest in establishing in the shortest possible time an effective cooperation relationship that will not only include the scientific achievements made by the Island in the fight against COVID-19, but also the expansion of academic and scientific exchange, transfer technology and joint work with the use of other Cuban products of proven value in the fight against dissimilar diseases.
The Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, founded in 1961 has 1,410 members in its academic staff, educates and trains more than 12,780 students, hosts 5 research institutes and more than 76 research centers, of which 7 are working as WHO collaborating center. Since 1988, and after the merger of the Ministry of Health with Medical Education, this University provides, maintains and promotes the health of more than 5,250,000 residents in Tehran, the capital of Iran, and neighboring cities.
The permanent economic, financial and commercial harassment by the government of the United States, which both countries face, increased genocidally in the current circumstances, has not prevented the Cuban and Iranian scientific communities from continuing to fight for the well-being of their peoples and working to strengthen their cooperation
