During the afternoon session this Wednesday of the 60th session of the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Minister of Public Health of Cuba, Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, and the director of said regional organization, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa da Silva, signed the Cooperation Strategy for the period 2023-2027.
Said document, Portal Miranda said after concluding the official conversations with the Director of PAHO, “constitutes an extremely important tool to guide technical cooperation actions between both parties during the next five years.”
The Strategic Note that we have signed today, he argued, provides full support for the decision to continue this path of collaboration.
Likewise, he added that the text is “the result of extensive teamwork,” which evaluated “the national Health priorities; the cooperation strategies of the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization; as well as the 2030 Agenda, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
The lines of work contained in the document, he specified, not only “reinforce cooperation in both directions, but also open new paths for its strengthening, taking into account the current economic, demographic and social situation of our country, and its inevitable impact on the health of the Cuban population.”
The existence in Cuba of eight WHO/PAHO collaborating centers, he emphasized, constitutes “further evidence of the diversity of potential that we have in our work, not only for the benefit of the Greater Antilles, but also of the region and the world".
Even in the midst of the most complex circumstances, said the Minister of Public Health, “Cuba ratifies its commitment and willingness to continue consolidating and expanding ties with PAHO, as well as to work tirelessly to defend health and life anywhere.” of the planet.”
