Cuba and South Africa celebrate 32 years of diplomatic relations

Pretoria, 11 May 2026. — The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in South Africa today hosted the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were formalised in Pretoria on 11 May 1994 by Presidents Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro.

A solemn ceremony at the embassy was attended by the South African Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, alongside members of the Latin America Division of the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a demonstration of the shared commitment to maintaining the historic and fraternal relationship between our countries.

The commemoration highlights the special nature of the ties between Cuba and South Africa, forged in solidarity and consolidated over the years through broad, multi-sectoral and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The event also pays tribute to the brotherhood between Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela, a legacy that continues to inspire the present and future of bilateral relations between the two nations.
