Cuba congratulates sister South Africa on Freedom Day

Pretoria, April 27, 2021.- Today South Africa commemorates the 27th anniversary of the first non-racial elections in the country and with it, the consolidation of the end of Apartheid.

Following the April 27, 1994 elections, Nelson Mandela, an iconic anti-Apartheid fighter who had spent 27 years in prison for fighting the shameful regime, became the country's first black president, with overwhelming support from the South African people.

Cuba is proud to have united its destiny with that of African combatants on the battlefield, with the noble purpose of defeating Apartheid.

The people and Government of Cuba deeply value the very special and deep friendship with the Government and people of South Africa.

Today we celebrate this historic day together with the South African brothers and sisters and salute the important role of South Africa in the search for peace in Africa and worldwide. South Africa can always count on Cuba.
