Cuba denounces international order imbalances and the intensification of the US blockade at the United Nations
New York, September 23, 2026. – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, continued his work agenda today within the framework of the High-Level Segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the day, the Cuban Foreign Minister participated in the high-level meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development. In this context, he warned of the profound imbalances that still persist in the international economic order and their particularly adverse consequences for developing countries. Addressing the issue, he stressed that "this new order is underpinned by sanctions, fear, and forced obedience, through the imposition of the unilateral interests of the United States. It is an unsustainable, unjust, and dangerous order for all peoples."
He also denounced that unilateral coercive measures and policies of economic pressure constitute obstacles to the full realization of the right to development. In particular, he pointed to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba—including the energy blockade—as the principal obstacle to the development of the Cuban people.
As part of his intense work agenda, the Cuban Foreign Minister held meetings with his counterparts from Russia, Equatorial Guinea, and Burundi, as well as with the Minister of Finance of Grenada. In all instances, they exchanged views on the state of diplomatic relations and other matters of bilateral and multilateral interest. The occasion provided an opportunity to update his colleagues on the difficult situation in Cuba, resulting from the unprecedented intensification of the US blockade, including the energy blockade, secondary sanctions, and the constant threat of military aggression. Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo participated in the high-level meeting of the Group of Countries and Friends of the Global South, where she highlighted the importance Cuba attaches to South-South cooperation and the unity of developing nations in promoting a fairer and more equitable international order, while also denouncing the genocidal blockade imposed by the United States. She also addressed the CELAC-EU ministerial meeting, reaffirming the need to preserve this space for cooperation free from conditionalities. Furthermore, she held a cordial meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration of Belize—during which the excellent state of bilateral relations was reaffirmed—and expressed gratitude for the firm solidarity shown to Cuba in its struggle against the blockade.
