Cuba has been elected as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a body made up by 47 member States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights in the world. Cuba, a founding member of the Council that abolished the former Human Rights Commission, is holding, for the fifth time, one seat among the eight reserved for the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States.
Our country, which remains strongly committed to the construction of an ever more just society, the wellbeing of human beings and social justice, won the secret, direct and individual vote of 170 members of the United Nations General Assembly, as a result of the respect and admiration for the humanistic work of the Cuban Revolution, the main guarantee to the enjoyment and protection of human rights in the Island.
This has been a way to honor the self-determination and resilience of the Cuban people in the face of the grave obstacles and threats resulting from the unilateral policy of hostility, aggressions and economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, which is a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of human rights and the main obstacle to the achievement of superior goals in this area.
It is also recognition of the significant progress achieved by Cuban men and women in the enjoyment of all their rights and the extensive record of international cooperation in the area of human rights, thus evidencing, through concrete facts, Cuba’s unequivocal disposition to engage in respectful, honest and open dialogue.
Cuba speaks at the Human Rights Council with a voice of its own, in a constructive spirit, based on its experience as a developing country that advocates dialogue and cooperation, contrary to punitive approaches and selectivity and in favor of the promotion and protection of all human rights for all.
