Havana, January 04, 2023.- The President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez decreed Official Mourning in Cuba on the occasion of the death on December 31 of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The Official Duel will begin from 06:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on January 5, as announced today by the Official Gazette of the Republic by publishing Presidential Decree 552/2023 in its Extraordinary Edition number 1 of the present year.
During the Official Duel, the lone star flag will be hoisted at half mast in public buildings and military institutions.
Benedict XVI expressed affectionate sentiments towards Cubans and spoke out against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba, pointing out that the efforts to cement a society with broad horizons, renewed and reconciled, are affected when economic measures imposed from outside of the country weigh negatively on the population, expresses the presidential decree.
