NEW YORK, September 20, 2017. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in the framework of the opening ceremony for the signing of the Treaty, which was held today at the headquarters of the United Nations.
Like Cuba, more than 40 countries signed the Treaty, which is a fundamental step forward towards nuclear disarmament and will contribute significantly to a world free of nuclear weapons.
Cuba's decision to sign the Treaty adopted on July 7 of this year in the framework of the United Nations Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination ratifies Cuba's commitment to promote nuclear disarmament, to which it gives the highest priority in the field of disarmament.
Cuba has reiterated the threat posed by nuclear weapons to the existence of the human species and the catastrophic consequences of employing a tiny fraction of the nearly 15,000 existing nuclear weapons.
With this Treaty, the international community made it clear that nuclear weapons are not only inhuman, immoral and ethically indefensible; but also illegal.
This Treaty shall enter into force 90 days after the date of deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.
