Nicosia, Cyprus. - The Cuban Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero, held on the morning of 27 November 2024, an important meeting with Professor Leonidas A. Phylactou, Director and Physician of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, at the headquarters of this prestigious institution in Nicosia.
During the meeting, Ambassador Suárez Cordero highlighted Cuba's significant advances in the field of neurological research and the pharmaceutical industry, achieved despite the inhumane economic blockade imposed against the island and its unjustified inclusion in the spurious list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism. The Cuban diplomat particularly highlighted the development of NeuroEpo, an innovative drug against Alzheimer's disease that has also shown promising results in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and is currently in clinical trials. This achievement exemplifies the resilience and innovative capacity of the Cuban scientific community in the face of adversity.
Professor Phylactou gave a detailed presentation on the work of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, both in the area of research and patient care. The meeting included a tour of the centre's modern facilities. As a result of the meeting, it was agreed to establish an exchange of information between the Cypriot Institute and the International Centre for Neurological Restoration (CIREN) in Cuba, with a view to developing future collaborations in areas of common interest. The visit took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and mutual interest in strengthening scientific links between both institutions, opening new perspectives for bilateral cooperation in the field of neurology and genetic research.
