The Cuban Ambassador to Cyprus, Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero, held a meetting with the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefenou

Nicosia, Cyprus - The Cuban Ambassador to Cyprus, Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero, held on the morning of October 23rd, a fruitful meeting with the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL), Stefanos Stefenou, in which various issues of bilateral and international interest were discussed.

During the meeting, the Cuban Ambassador gave the AKEL Secretary General an update on the current situation in Cuba, with emphasis on the recent general power cut that affected several regions of the country and the serious consequences of Hurricane Oscar, which has left an unfortunate toll of 7 deaths and considerable damage, especially in the province of Guantanamo.

Both sides exchanged views on the regional and international situation, recognising the complex challenges facing the left in the current context. They agreed on the importance of maintaining unity in diversity, a key principle for strengthening progressive movements in an increasingly polarised global environment.

AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefenou expressed his full solidarity with the Cuban people and government in this difficult moment, expressing his deep regret for the human losses and damages suffered. Furthermore, Stefanos strongly denounced the unjust, genocidal and illegal blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 60 years, highlighting the serious effects that this policy has had on the daily life of the Cuban people. He also condemned the inclusion of Cuba on the spurious list of countries sponsoring terrorism, underlining the injustice of this measure.

Stefenou affirmed his commitment to transmit this message of support to his party's grassroots and to mobilise solidarity actions in favour of the Cuban people, in order to mitigate the effects of this crisis and to continue to denounce the blockade at the international level.

This meeting reinforces the historical ties of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and AKEL, a party that has maintained a firm position of support for Cuban sovereignty and its right to develop freely without external interference (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
