Nicosia, Cyprus, February 17, 2026. The Cuban ambassador to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, received on the morning of this Tuesday Her Excellency Mrs. Mercedes Alonso Frauyle, ambassador of Spain on the Eastern Mediterranean island, who paid a courtesy visit to the Cuban diplomatic mission following her recent arrival.
Both diplomats reviewed issues concerning the regional geopolitical situation and agreed on the importance of the meeting held this Monday between the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, during Rodríguez Parrilla's visit to the Spanish capital.
The Cuban ambassador shared with his Spanish counterpart detailed information on the damage the island is currently suffering as a result of more than sixty years of economic, financial, and commercial blockade against his nation, worsened by recent pressures and the specific blockade of fuel supplies to the island, following the executive order of January 29 imposed by the United States Government, in blatant violation of international law and in complete disregard of the United Nations Charter.
“As you well know,” Pino Martínez pointed out, “my country received the support of the majority of the world in the last vote at the UN General Assembly, after obtaining 165 votes in favor of the resolution calling for an end to the United States blockade of our island. It was voted on again along with Cuba and for Life, but the northern nation insists on ignoring it and strengthening it.”
For her part, Mrs. Alonso Frauyle noted the need to uphold and reaffirm respect for multilateralism, international law, and compliance with the United Nations Charter in order to face the many challenges that today undermine world peace and the self-determination of peoples.
Regarding her shared interest in strengthening cultural cooperation within the diplomatic corps accredited in Cyprus, this exchange made it possible to identify potential joint actions between both diplomatic missions, based on previous experiences in organizing the second edition of the Ibero-American Film Festival of Cyprus, an event that validated the “good work” and timely collaboration among the diplomatic representations of Brazil, Portugal, Peru, Spain, and Cuba, together with the Cervantes Institutes, Camões, and the Friends of Cinema Association.
