Cuban ambassador holds meeting with the special representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Nicosia, Cyprus, April 8, 2026. - Mr. Khassim Diagne, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP), was received this Wednesday by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in this capital, Rubén Pino Martínez.

Both parties discussed the danger generated by the military escalation unleashed in the Middle East, creating great instability for the geopolitical situation of the region. At the same time, both shared impressions on the efforts of the aforementioned personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, in his role as mediator, in supporting initiatives that build trust between both parties, improve livelihoods across the Mediterranean island, encourage dialogue, and create new purposes and long-term commitments for the construction of peace in Cyprus.

Incidentally, Khassim Diagne informed the Cuban diplomat about the role played by the specialized units that currently make up UNFICYP in Cyprus, regarding their tireless work in supporting the search for a peaceful solution and a consensual agreement on the island territory, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

For his part, the Cuban diplomat offered the special representative and Head of UNFICYP an update on the situation on the island, regarding the hostile policy of economic suffocation and energy blockade imposed by the Trump administration against Cuba, increased in recent times with particular severity following the executive order of January 29, which significantly harms living conditions and hinders the normal functioning—and even the subsistence—of the Cuban nation.

Mr. Khassim Diagne showed special interest and concern over Cuba's current economic situation, describing the economic blockade, and particularly the energy blockade imposed on the island, as "unacceptable," as it seriously threatens the survival of its population.

In this context, Pino Martínez thanked the United Nations representative for his concern, considerations, and solidarity with Cuba, a country for which —according to his confession— he professes special respect and affection, for its comprehensive and world-renowned cultural wealth.
