Cuban Ambassador meets with His Eminence Nikiforos, Bishop of Kykkou and Tillirias

Nicosia, Cyprus - The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Cyprus, Mr. Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero, held on the morning of February 25, a meaningful meeting with His Eminence Nikiforos, Bishop of Kykkou and Tillirias, in the premises of the Holy Monastery of Kykkos.

During the cordial meeting, the Cuban diplomat expressed his sincere gratitude to the Bishop for receiving him, which allowed the exchange of valuable memories about the visit of His Eminence to Cuba 20 years ago on the occasion of the inauguration of the statue of Archbishop Makarios III in Havana. They both agreed on highlighting the supportive, kind, and dignified character of the Cuban people. Bishop Nikiforos shared that he retains the best memories of that trip, where he had the opportunity to interact directly with the Cubans and to witness their genuine kindness and hospitality.

The Cuban ambassador updated His Eminence on the serious difficulties faced by Cuba due to the impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed for more than 60 years, as well as the unjust inclusion of the country on the spurious list of state sponsors of terrorism. The diplomat highlighted the paradox of this designation when it is recognized worldwide that Cuba has shown its solidarity by sending doctors and non-bombs to numerous countries.

Bishop Nikiforos acknowledged the obsolescence of this unjust policy that has been left behind and expressed his concern about how these measures affect the Cuban people in their daily lives in all sectors of the economy. The Cuban diplomat also reported on the expressions of solidarity from Cyprus that have allowed medical aid to be sent to the Marianao Paediatric Hospital.

At the conclusion of the meeting, His Eminence showed interest in collaborating with the fourth edition of the event ‘Viva Cuba’, scheduled for June this year in the premises of the Bishopric of Tamassos (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
