Pretoria, 25 May 2025.- Ambassador Esther Armenteros, Cuba's Chargé d'Affaires a.i. in South Africa, participated in the main event commemorating the 62nd anniversary of Africa Day. Organised by the South African Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the event was an emotional occasion.
The diplomatic corps in attendance enjoyed a grand display of South African culture, including traditions, music and dances, many of which Cuba has inherited thanks to the strong influence of the African continent on Cuban art and culture.
Peace Mabe, the Deputy Minister of the Department, who chaired the event, acknowledged Cuba's modest contribution to African freedom. She recalled with particular emotion that “the Cubans only took away the bones of their dead, who fell fighting alongside their African brothers for freedom”.
Undoubtedly, the close relationship between Cuba and Africa is centuries old and is marked by brotherhood, sacrifice, the struggle for independence, and the ideals of justice and common welfare — something that was recognised today.
