Canberra, February 14th, 2019. –In an official ceremony held at the Government House in Canberra, the Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, received the letters of credence of Ariel Lorenzo Rodríguez as the new Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to that country.
During a brief exchange, the Cuban Ambassador ratified to the Governor General the will of the Cuban government for promoting further friendly bilateral relations and cooperation links with Australia, especially on the ocassion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He also high lighted the current potentialities to develop join tprojects on sectors suchus biotechnology, pharmaceutica lindustry, mining, oil prospecting and sports, as well as the importance Cuba gives to triangular cooperation projects promoted with Canberra for the Pacific Islands’ benefit .
On the other hand, the Governor General acknowledged the progress made by Cuba in science, education and health, as well as the outstanding work carried out by Cuban medical cooperation around the world, particularly in the South Pacific region. Furthermore, he referred to Australia’s support to Cuban resolution against the blockade imposed by the United States which is presented on a yearly basis at the United Nations.
Cuba and Australia have maintained continuous diplomatic relations since 1989.
