Nicosia, January 22, 2024 - The Cuban Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Angel Gustavo Suarez Cordero presented the Greek translation of the book "History of Cuba: The Yoke and the Star" by Professor José Cantón Navarro, at the cultural evening dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution which took place at the Irini Club in Aglantzia.
The Association for Peace and the Cuba Cyprus Friendship Association organised a magnificent evening to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Stallo Constantinou, Secretary of the Cyprus Cuba Friendship Association presented the programme of the event.
Dr. Andreas Chrysanthou, President of the Cyprus Cuba Friendship Association conveyed a message of congratulations to the Cuban people and government on the 65th Anniversary of the Triumph of their Revolution, while enunciating the commitment to continue the solidarity and fight for the lifting of the genocidal blockade imposed by the USA on Cuba and its people for more than 60 years.
For his part, Lefteris Georgiades, President of the Peace Council, referred to the Cuban Revolution as a beacon of light, for choosing the star over the yoke and defending sovereignty and independence. He congratulated Cuba on the 65th Anniversary of the Triumph of its Revolution and urged the lifting of the blockade to achieve total peace for a dignified people.
The Cuban Ambassador thanked the great friend of Cuba and excellent translator Andreas Ignatiou for the Greek translation of the book, which was also supported by several friends of the Cyprus-Cuba Friendship Association and, of course, by the Almira Publishing House. The Cuban diplomat went through the history of Cuba, highlighting the figure of José Martí and the importance of the Revolution for Latin America and the world, and for Cubans in particular. The Cuban Ambassador pointed out that the Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro was not wrong to warn that the most difficult road would be faced after the revolutionary triumph, giving concrete examples of the struggle of the Cuban people against the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Terrorist, Biological and Media Attacks over the years, and all for maintaining their conviction of sovereignty, independence and social justice and not giving in. And how the unilateral, genocidal and inhumane blockade imposed by the US against the Cuban people has been the main obstacle to the progress of the Caribbean island's economy.
The evening also featured a deluxe musical programme with the performance in song of the poetry of José Martí, the Cuban national hero, revolutionary and intellectual, who even gave his life in the struggle for the independence of his country and who continues to inspire, with his music. The artists George Kalogirou, Frederiki Tombazou and Dimitris Mesimeris delighted all present with their rebellious and inspiring music.
Also present at the evening were Christos Christofias and Vera Policarpou, MP and Head of International Relations of the Communist Party of Cyprus - AKEL (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
