Cuban Ambassador received by South African Minister of Health

Pretoria, 23 January 2026.- The Cuban Ambassador to South Africa, Fakri Rodríguez Pinelo, held a positive meeting with the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, and his team.

During the conversation, both parties exchanged views on the development of bilateral cooperation in this sector. The Cuban ambassador highlighted Cuba's willingness to continue offering quality medical care to South Africans, after 30 years of uninterrupted presence of Cuban doctors.

They also celebrated the success of the Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro academic training programme, which has already graduated more than 3,000 South African doctors on the island.

Also participating were Joe Erasmus, Deputy Director for the Caribbean Desk at the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation, as well as Dr Jorge Delgado, head of the Cuban medical brigade in the country, and Bryan Betancourt, Second Secretary at the Cuban Embassy.
