Victoria, October 3, 2023._ The Cuban Ambassador to Seychelles, Martha Hernández Caneiro, participated in the tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, organized by the High Commission of the Republic of India in Seychelles.
The activity took place at the Peace Park in Victoria and was attended by Internal Affairs Minister Errol Fonseka, Local Government Minister Rose-Marie Hoareau, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and the Indian community in Seychelles.
At the ceremony, Diane Benoit, director of the James R. Mancham Research Institute for Peace and Diplomacy at the University of Seychelles, referred to the causes Gandhi championed such as the empowerment of women, the principles of truth and non-violence, as well as confronting social discrimination and illiteracy, among other evils of British colonialism.
For his part, the Indian High Commissioner, Karthik Pande, outlined the fundamental principles advocated by Mahatma Gandhi, affectionately known as Bapu, which led to India's independence. He said that the father of the Indian nation is a source of inspiration in the struggle for civil rights and highlighted his role in leading a great independence movement that changed the course of history.
The Cuban ambassador conveyed to her Indian counterpart her admiration for Mahatma Gandhi and the validity of his teachings, which transcend borders and motivate to promote the spirit of unity and humanism.
Every year in Seychelles, Mahatma Gandhi is honored on the anniversary of his birth.
