Nicosia, Cyprus - The Ambassador of Cuba to the Republic of Cyprus, Ángel Gustavo Suárez Cordero, paid a working visit to the Cyprus Institute on the morning of December 18, 2024, where he was received by its President, Mr. Stavros Malas.
Mr. Malas informed the Cuban diplomat about the work being done at the Cyprus Institute, both in the research sector within the national territory and internationally. He also showed the most important projects and the different postgraduate study programs, and a presentation of the different programs was made.
For his part, the Cuban Ambassador expressed that, despite the blockade imposed by the United States government on Cuba, innovation, research, and environmental protection are essential policies for the island. He highlighted that the Cyprus Institute and various Cuban institutions could collaborate in certain areas, as the challenges faced by both islands are very similar, marked by climate change, beyond the distances and geographical location.
The Cuban diplomat had the opportunity to tour three important areas of the Institution: the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), the Linear Fresnel Collector (LFC), and the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs), where he received extensive information on the lines of research being carried out in each one.
Also present at the meeting were part of the management team of the Cyprus Institute, such as Mr. Theodoros Zachariades, Director of STEDI-RC; Mr. Vasilios Tsakalas, Director of Research and Technical Support; and Eleni Sophocleous, Deputy Vice President of Policy and Internal Communication.
At the end of the visit, the Cuban Ambassador thanked Dr. Malas for the warm welcome and the willingness to collaborate in the future between the Cyprus Institute and Cuban institutions (EmbaCuba Cyprus).
