On the evening of July 29, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Pablo Ginarte participated in the screening of the documentary All Guantánamo is Ours, hosted by Sands Films Cinema Club and organized by the North London Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
The film, directed by Colombian journalist Hernando Calvo Ospina, explores the historical and legal basis of Cuba’s claim for the return of the territory illegally occupied by the United States in the province of Guantánamo since 1903. What began as an imposed naval base under the Platt Amendment has since become synonymous with egregious human rights violations, particularly following the creation of a detention centre in 2002 that remains a stain on the conscience of the world.
After the screening, Pablo Ginarte recalled that “to see the images and hear the voices in All Guantánamo Is Ours is to feel the heartbeat of the Cuban people,” underscoring the emotional power of the documentary and Cuba’s enduring demand for the return of its land.
Following the screening, Pablo engaged in a dynamic exchange with the audience. Attendees expressed strong support for Cuba’s position and raised thoughtful questions about legal mechanisms, the role of international solidarity, and the prospects for change under current U.S. political dynamics.
During the event, Lorraine Tillett, Secretary of the North London Cuba Solidarity Campaign, informed attendees that a container of vital aid had successfully arrived in Guantánamo province on 26 July, an especially meaningful date, as it marks the anniversary of Cuba’s National Rebellion Day. The initiative was organised in collaboration with the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) and its national coordinator, Hero of the Republic Gerardo Hernández.
The event was a powerful act of solidarity and public education, offering clarity on an issue too often misunderstood or ignored in international media. The Embassy of Cuba extends its heartfelt thanks to the North London Cuba Solidarity Campaign and Sands Films Cinema Club for their ongoing commitment to truth, justice, and the sovereign rights of the Cuban people.
As was made clear during the event, the demand remains unwavering: the territory illegally occupied by the United States in Guantánamo must be returned to Cuba. "Guantánamo is Cuba. All of Guantánamo is ours."
