With this phrase Dr. Aderonke Oyewo, head of the Diabetes Clinic of Block 6, in Gaborone, synthesized her opinion when asked about one of the Cuban doctors working under her supervision, since May 2016, as part of the intergovernmental agreement in force between Botswana and Cuba.
He is Dr. Bruno Díaz Luis, an Internal Medicine Specialist, one the thousands Cuban health professionals, members of the renown “Army of White Coats”, that work at this moment in 61 countries of Africa, Middle East, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania.
Dr. Oyewo, kindly expressed that over the past four years Dr. Bruno “has excelled in his professional approach to managing our Diabetes patients to international standard and in a very safe and dedicated caring manner. His group of patients will testify to this and are always willing to wait on the queue to be seen by him alone. I am very happy with the way he takes care of our patients. I also like the way he shares his thoughts and ideas with me when it comes to managing our patients as a team.”
She added that the Cuban specialist “is very committed to his work which he takes very seriously and this starts with being punctual to work every day. He is also very hard working and determined to consult with as many patients as possible each day to relieve our usually over booked clinics. He is willing to go above and beyond the call of his routine duties to ensure that the clinic is running smoothly and that we finish on time.”
Dr. Bruno “also has a very nice personality and attitude towards the other staff members across the board, including myself. I have seen him making himself approachable and available to support other colleagues in time of need. He has certainly stepped into and adapted to the culture of our local setting. He always has a word of encouragement for me and a smile which I appreciate”, Dr. Oyewo commented.
She concluded, “We really appreciate Dr. Bruno's contribution to our Clinic.”
For him, when this first medical mission abroad finishes, the return to Cuba will have a mix feeling of happiness and pain, but encouraged by the professional satisfaction of the fulfilled duty.
Cuban health professionals in Botswana have been saving lives for more than 30 years. They are now deployed in nine cities and villages across this southern African country.
