Cuban Embassy celebrates 99th anniversary of Commander Fidel Castro

On 13 August, in commemoration of the 99th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth, the Cuban Embassy in the United Kingdom visited the Marx Memorial Library & Workers' School to begin collaborative work on the FIDEL 100: A Year of Legacy and Solidarity programme, planned as part of the activities celebrating the life and legacy of the historic leader.

Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Pablo Ginarte, accompanied by First Secretary for Economic and Commercial Affairs Soima Méndez, thanked Director Meirian Jump and the library team for their warm welcome and their willingness to collaborate on the activities planned around the figure of Fidel for 2026. This alliance is an important step towards developing cultural and historical memory initiatives that will bring the British public closer to the career and legacy of Commander Fidel Castro.

During the visit, we recalled the photograph of Fidel that was presented and unveiled in 2016 by two of the Cuban anti-terrorists, René González and Gerardo Hernández, during their stay at this historic centre. This gesture reinforces the bonds of memory and solidarity between our institutions and underlines the importance of maintaining spaces for dialogue, cultural exchange and solidarity.
