Dublin, October 24, 2024.- The Cuban embassy in Ireland learned with satisfaction that the Irish MEPs, Katheleen Funchion and Lynn Boylan, both from the Sinn Féin Party, joined other members of the European Parliament, belonging to various political formations and from 12 European countries, signing a letter of solidarity with Cuba after the latest energy emergency events and the passage of Hurricane Oscar through the east of the country.
In the letter, 31 European Parliamentarians express their strongest support for the Cuban people and their condemnation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States. This policy has been repeatedly rejected by the international community, and in the letter, the MEPs demand its immediate lifting.
In their message, the signatories highlight that the US blockade constitutes "an act of political aggression and a clear violation of international law," which seriously affects the development of the Caribbean country. The letter highlights the extraordinary challenges that Cuba faces in the energy and climate fields, aggravated by the blockade, which has lasted for more than six decades.
The MEPs recognize the enormous efforts made by the Cuban people to resist the consequences of the blockade, which is suffocating the country's economy and hindering access to fuels, technologies and resources essential to develop energy infrastructures. Likewise, they severely criticize the inclusion of Cuba on the list of States that promote terrorism, an action that "further hinders financial flows and the possibilities of international cooperation."
In a clear gesture of support for Cuba's sovereignty, European parliamentarians demand in the name of "justice, truth and international solidarity" that the blockade be ended and that Cuba be removed from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. American government. Only in this way, they say, will Cuba be able to fully exercise its sovereign right to development in conditions of peace.
The letter of solidarity comes at a crucial moment, a few days before, on October 29 and 30, the UN General Assembly will vote again on the resolution condemning the blockade, a measure that has historically been rejected by almost all of the member countries of said organization.
The Cuban embassy deeply appreciates the gesture of solidarity of MEPs Katheleen Funchion and Lynn Boylan, which highlights, once again, the solidarity with the Cuban people on the part of the Irish.
