Cuban experts paid visit to the National Earthquake Information Center of the United States

On May 7- 11, 2018, experts from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) of the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), paid a visit to the National Earthquake Information Center of  the United States Geological Survey, located in Golden, Colorado, in the United States. The purpose of said visit was to identify the seismic records of earthquakes with epicenter in the Florida Straits registered by both seismological services.

The visit provided the opportunity to integrate data from seismological stations from both countries, thus allowing the recalculation of earthquakes by using more information and improving the precise location of epicenters. Likewise, the visit contributed to better characterize tectonic faults responsible thereof, which will help to update the seismic hazard surveys.

This bilateral technical cooperation took place under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment of Cuba, through its National Center for Seismological Research, and the Department of the Interior of the United States of America, through the United States Geological Survey, for the cooperation in the exchange of information on seismic records and related geological data, signed in December 2016.
