Canberra, 21 February 2024. The Cuban flag raising ceremony was held today at the Latin American Plaza in Canberra, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between Cuba and Australia.
The ceremony was attended, on behalf of the Australian Foreign Ministry, by the Associate Secretary, Tim Yeend; the Chief of Protocol, Arthur Spyrou; the Director of the Latin America and Caribbean Section, Diana Nelson; and the officer of the Section itself, Drew Dainer. All the members of GRULAC and representatives of several countries from the rest of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Canberra were also present.
During the activity, the Australian military band performed an excellent interpretation of the national anthems of Cuba and Australia.
The main speech of the ceremony was in charge of the Cuban ambassador, Tanieris Diéguez, who highlighted the importance of both anniversaries and the achievements of the Cuban Revolution, as well as the strengthening of bilateral relations between both countries.
The ambassador also strongly condemned the blockade imposed by the government of the United States on Cuba and expressed her special gratitude for the support of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society in its actions against the blockade.
