Cuban Foreign Minister denounces pressures from the United States to Latin American countries

Declaration to denounce the United States pressures to undermine the support of Latin American countries to the Cuban Draft Resolution against the economic, commercial and financial blockade suffered by its people.

I thank you deeply for your attendance. I have invited you to attend this meeting with the purpose of denouncing, before the International Public Opinion, that the State Department of the United States of America has been carrying out intensive actions of pressure and blackmail against UN member states to erode the voting pattern in support to the Draft Resolution of the UN General Assembly entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, which will be considered by said body on November 6 and 7.

Far from paying heed to the repeated appeal by the international community, which for more than two decades has almost unanimously adopted this resolution, the United States is orchestrating new maneuvers to hinder its adoption.

The pressures I have mentioned are being particularly exercised against Latin American countries.

During the second last week of October, that is to say, hardly one week ago, the US State Department summoned the embassies of four Latin American countries to Washington. The purpose of the meeting was to make them vote against said Draft Resolution.

The meeting I have just mentioned adds up to several intensive arrangements made directly by us embassies in the capitals of six Latin American countries as a means of pressure with the purpose of forcing a change of vote.

The crude way in which president Trump’s administration imposes a whole range of preconditions and resorts to blackmail to meet its foreign policy goals is only too well known.

After the resounding failure in 2018, when the State Department attempted to amend and change the nature of the resolution that had been traditionally presented to the General Assembly, this year the US main goal is to undermine the vote pattern by exerting pressures in all regions of the planet.

Cuba knows it counts on the unanimous support of the peoples of Latin America and the whole planet and expects that none of the governments of the region will give in to Washington’s anti-Cuban designs, thus giving a blind eye to the recognized will of their respective peoples, the world’s public opinion, international law and the most elemental standards of ethics and justice.

Thank you, very much.
