The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, participated in the XVII BRICS Summit during the session held under the theme "Environment, COP 30, and Global Health," which was open to member states, partners, and invited guests.
The Cuban leader reflected on the lack of political will among those who should contribute the most to solving the environmental crisis. Discussions on these issues are not progressing with the urgency and direction required by the planet. Affluent societies resist changing their unsustainable and irrational patterns of production and consumption.
The Cuban Head of State also addressed the complex challenges of global health. Substantial factors prevent the full enjoyment of the right to health for all people, including disparities between countries and populations, unequal access to health services, medical supplies, and technologies, and the imposition of unilateral coercive measures.
As part of his work agenda, the Cuban President held a cordial meeting with Dilma Rousseff, in her capacity as President of the BRICS New Development Bank. Both parties discussed the importance of Cuba's admission to BRICS as a partner country and strengthening ties with the institution led by the former Brazilian President.
A special moment of the visit was the fraternal meeting with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. They discussed the historic ties between both peoples and governments, as well as existing potential to increase cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Similarly, Díaz-Canel exchanged greetings with the President of South Africa, H.E. Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa; the Director-General of the World Health Organization, H.E. Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus; the President of Bolivia, Luis Alberto Arce Catacora; and Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez. In all cases, the positive state of relations was reaffirmed, and discussions were held on bilateral and international agenda items.
