Pretoria, 25 May 2024 - The Cuban State Mission in South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between both countries and the 61st anniversary of Africa Day with a softball game today. Around 150 people attended, including members of the various brigades working in the country, Cuban residents, South African friends and the embassy staff.
The Director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean at the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Mr Bingo Thamaga, threw out the first pitch to open the friendly match. Three teams played: Mambises, Caciques and Rebeldes, representing the UNECA Brigade, the Doctors and the Embassy, respectively.
In a display of sporting talent and youth, the doctors won the competition and were congratulated, as were the other teams, by the Cuban Ambassador to Pretoria, Enrique Orta González.
It was a day of celebration, of tribute to Africa and the huge heritage it has left to all Cubans.
